Rules

You have 10 shares which must be allocated among the teams, without knowing which shares the other players own. You choose how to allocate the shares: you can spread them evenly among 10 different teams, or you can focus on a smaller subset of teams. The only restriction is that you can take at most 4 shares in any one team. The number of shares per team is not fixed; the better teams will earn more points, but those points are likely to be spread among more shareholders as they will attract more "investors".

The number of points a team gets depends on the stage of the tournament:

  • \(1\) for winning the group stage matches (and \(0.5\) for a draw);
  • \(1\) for getting into to the playoff stage as first (and \(0.5\) as second);
  • \(2\) for winning the round of 16;
  • \(4\) for winning the quarter finals;
  • \(8\) for winning the semi finals;
  • \(4\) for winning the third place final;
  • \(16\) for winning the final.

Note: Wins include those after overtime and penalties.

For every team a player has invested in (owns shares of) the player will get a number of points equal to the number of points the team got times the number of shares they own in the team, divided by the total number of shares in the team.

For example, you own \(3\) shares of Belgium and the total number of shares for Belgium are \(40\). Belgium totalizes at the end of the tournament \(10\) points. The points you get from Belgium are \(\frac{10 \cdot 3}{40} = 0.75\).

The winner is the player who has the most points after the tournament. In case of a draw, the player who owns a bigger share in the winning team wins (or if those are equal then the runner-up and so on).

You must decide your credit allocation before the 20th of November 2022 - no changes are allowed after this deadline.

Game Theory Question

After the World Cup, I sent a survey asking the participants to play a different game with the following rules:

  1. You have 10 shares to invest on the World Cup teams (you can take at most 4 shares in any one team).
  2. The points per team are fixed and shown in the table below.
  3. The player will get a number of points equal to the number of points the team has, times the number of shares they own in the team, divided by the total number of shares that all the players invested in the team.

where would you invest your shares in order to win?

Remember that your score depends also on other players' choices. For example, you own \(1\) share of Japan and the total number of shares for Japan will be \(9\). Japan has \(3\) points. The points you get from Japan are \(\frac{1 \cdot 3}{9} = 0.333\).
